Being a musician - How 'original' must you be?

Sorry for not updating my blog on a frequent basis. Anyway, I was just Youtube-ing away this evening. Stumbled upon a band called Beady Eye (basically they're Oasis reunited, minus Noel Gallagher). Was listening to their song 'The Roller' while reading the comments. What a ton of Beatles-related comments they are. Some of the comments seems to lambast the band as a Beatles copycat, the same kind of comments thrown in when they were in Oasis. In fact, 'The Roller' is said to be a rip-off from John Lennon's 'Instant Karma', saying that both the band and the song lacked originality.

Ok...... understandable. But then again, there's like......... 12 notes all together. 12 FREAKIN' NOTES. So, the question here is, how 'original' must a band be?

I personally don't like it when people simply complains that a certain artist sounds like another, more famous artist(s). At least give them credits for their efforts. You know, writing only 1 song is not an easy thing. It takes inspiration. Now you know why they don't sing 8-9 'original' songs on Glee every week. Even if you don't like it, just don't bother.

One more thing, for those who likes to fire those 'originality comment' bullets on musicians, I challenge you to write a song. Well, not just a song, but a very, very good AND original song, then post it on Youtube. If you can do it, congratulations. If you couldn't, well..... tough luck. You will then understand how a musician feels.

Just remember, when you wanted to do something, was it because you 'originally' thought about it, or were you inspired by someone who already did it? After all, what's more important is not how 'original' you are but, how true are you being yourself.

Until then.....................
